![]() ![]() ![]() They’re very cute! What’s their role in Sonic Frontiers, and do you see them as limited to the Starfall Islands? Or are they a bit like Wisps, where they may return in future Sonic titles? I wanted to ask you about some of the things Sonic Team has revealed over the last week - first of all, the Kocos. Sonic Stadium: Thank you very much for taking the time to speak with the Sonic community at Gamescom, Iizuka-san. We also asked about those darn cute Koco as well, don’t worry. We were given an opportunity to sit down with Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, for a brief five minutes, to discuss the implications of Flynn’s involvement with the game and what it could mean for other Sonic universes. ![]() And it all starts with Sonic Frontiers’ story, itself a collaboration between Sonic Team and IDW Sonic comic writer Ian Flynn. While Sonic’s latest adventure does aim to reinvent the tried-and-tested format with its free-roaming ‘open zone’ concept, SEGA is also keen to use the game as a stepping stone to connect the multiple entertainment universes of Sonic the Hedgehog together in a unified way. Not that it’ll win everyone over, of course it is a Sonic game, after all.Sonic Frontiers looks to be the most ambitious entry in the game series yet – and not just in the gameplay department. I’m fairly confident that people will warm up to the game more once more of the game is shown off and explained, though. I will agree that it’s kind of bizarre that SEGA chose to debut the first look at the game like this, though… Like, I feel like their assumption must have been that people would be mostly excited at the idea of an open world Sonic game so they could hold back on revealing further context until later, perhaps thinking that the first look would be enough to catch people’s interest well enough and inspire speculation and discussion about the game world and its mechanics which they’ll detail later on, but if that’s the case…it obviously did not go over well like they probably expected it to, lol. Not that it’ll win everyone over, of course it is a Sonic game, after all. And some of the points of criticism can even be explained by the leaks-for example, the enemies look like they do because they were spawned from an AI that Eggman created that went out of control they’re not traditional Eggman robots or anything like that. It’s clear that the open world areas still have more to them, too not only is it likely that many things are being intentionally hidden from the gameplay we’ve seen, like the cyberspace portals, possibly more enemies, etc., but there are going to be four of these huge islands and we’ve presumably only seen the first of them. Like, from the leaks we know there’s still plenty to be seen-namely the more traditional boost-style cyberspace zones. I don’t understand why everyone is being so quick to write off Frontiers as terrible and irredeemable before we’ve even seen any further context for the game and its mechanics.
